Among the works vying for an award at the 20th Haifa International Theater Festival for Children next year will be a play that is based on thed children's book penned by kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Schalit. The stage adaptation of When the Shark and the Fish First Met, which Schalit wrote when he was 11, is one of six plays selected from among hundreds to participate in the festival. The play was written by Uri Omanuti, Ronen Ifrach and Iris Penn, who also direct and star.
In an attempt to say something different in dance, the Try-It Dance Festival takes place December 17-19 in various spaces at Bikurei Ha'etim in Tel Aviv. There are 10 works, all short pieces up to 30 minutes in length that incorporate various disciplines. They include Gina by Yifat Pel-Barka'i, billed as a solo for dancer, a dress, cell-phone and piano; Navel, the first work in Israel by Vienna Dance Academy new-graduate Efrat Nevo; One-Man Band by Adi Peleg and Movement in Space by Shalvit Yaron, which is set to music commissioned for the festival by Gabriel Moked. There are also some 50 video-dance pieces. Tickets are a reasonable NIS 20.
