1868 is a restaurant famous for serving exceptional, authentic, and high-quality Israeli cuisine. Last week, a sister restaurant, Caf 1868, opened its doors in Jerusalem's Baka neighborhood. Caf 1868 is a modern dairy restaurant that immediately makes you feel the ease of home. From the crystal chandeliers to the shiny table cloth, attention to detail is well-expressed in this sleek eatery. "The place was established to complete the culinary experience of the local cuisine," says chef and owner Menachem Katz. "At Caf 1868, diners will have the chance to enjoy the pleasure of high-quality dairy cuisine wrapped in the prestige of 1868." The morning menu features different styles of breakfast, including Jerusalemite, which features spinach and kashkaval cheese souffl along with a poached egg and rye bread with goat cheese, arugula and sumac. Afternoons, Katz will be stirring the pots with the support of a few expert chefs and pastry experts, and together they will dish up the best of local produce. Dishes such as summer salad with snow peas, lettuce hearts and potatoes in walnut vinaigrette; or browned-potato gnocchi with red mullet, garlic and tomato seeds will be served as first courses. For mains, seabass atop almond cream, and celery with raisin chutney in sage-citrus butter cream; or the bass filet in vanilla-gew rztraminer sauce with spinach and morel mushrooms are among the delicacies offered. Caf 1868, Derekh Beit Lechem 34, Jerusalem, is open daily from 7:30 a.m. until midnight. Tel (02) 672-5366 (kosher).
