The Arab-Jewish Youth Orchestra is the winner of 2009's Würth Prize, worth €20,000. The prize is awarded annually by the German Würth Group to individuals or projects that have excelled in the music sphere. Last year's prize went to Gustavo Dudamel; past recipients include Philip Glass, Tabea Zimmerman and Claudio Abbado.
This year's prize will be handed out in a ceremony in Berlin on June 29; representing the Arab-Jewish Youth Orchestra will be its founder and director, Dr. Meir Wiesel, and five selected musicians from the group. The orchestra was chosen following a tour in Germany in October 2008. It was formed in 2002, and since then has performed around Israel and the world.
