There’s more than one way to celebrate Israel’s 66th birthday this week – unless you’re into dance music. Then there really is only one way to go. Celebrated Belgian/Greek DJ duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike are returning to Israel for an Independence Day performance at the Blu 4 Dance party at the Tel Aviv Exhibition Grounds.
The two brothers, born Dimitri & Michael Thivaios, are considered by many to be the pioneers of the electronic music genre, with many hit singles to their credit. Their latest, “Tremor,” made it to the number one spot on the Billboard DJ charts.
“Israel is one of our favorite countries,” Vegas told The Jerusalem Post last week. “We’ve played here a few times.
It’s a brilliant crowd.”
The duo’s arrival in Tel Aviv is part of the Blu 4 Dance festival, at which DJ Wolfpack will also be performing.
“Wolfpack tours a lot with us. We’re good friends,” said Vegas.
Growing up in Belgium, Vegas’ dream was to become a professional musician.
At age 13, after watching a friend go to work in the DJ booth, he fell in love with the craft.
Since the brothers began their career together in 2003, they have defined more than a decade of electronic music, headlining many festivals including the Belgian festival Tomorrowland, this year marking their fifth as headliners and sixth as performers. The electronic duo is constantly touring and is arriving in Israel at the close of a UK tour. Their career reached a milestone last year when they were voted number six in DJ Mag’s annual top 100 list.
“It was an amazing surprise,” Vegas said. “We could not have expected so many people would vote for us... we’re honored.”
While Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike have not yet released an album, Vegas revealed in the interview that they have recorded many new tracks and that a potential first album may be a possibility.
“We have a lot of new music ready,” he explained about the duo’s future. “We’re planning on maybe making a new album... and then a huge arena tour.”
Tickets to Blu 4 Dance are currently available at www.lubliana.co.il. The party begins at 4:30 p.m. and is restricted to those 18 years of age and older.
