Inbal Pinto and Avshalom Pollak will open the 2006-07 opera season with Armide by Christoph Willbald Gluck, the Israeli Opera Company announced on Wednesday. Pinto and Pollak directed, choreographed and designed the set and costumes for the opera at the Opera House of Wiesbaden in Germany in 2004.
Armide will open the new season in November, marking the first time this opera will be performed at the Israeli Opera company.
The Russian Helikon Opera troupe will stage Modest Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov and Dmitry Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk in December. Dmitry Bertman will direct both operas, while Vladimir Ponkin will conduct.
Los Angeles, Washington and Israel's opera houses are collaborating on a new production of Verdi's The Troubador for the upcoming season. American Stephen Lawless will direct the performance. This 15th century opera enjoys worldwide popularity. The almost unbroken melodiousness of Verdi's score is said to be the opera's drawing card, especially as the libretto is a jumbled affair. This is the first time The Troubador will be performed in Israel.
In addition to Armide and The Troubador, another opera making its debut at the Israeli Opera is Puccini's The Triptych. Rani Calderon and Asher Fish will share conducting duties.
Altogether nine productions will be staged during the new season which opens in November this year and wraps up July 2007.
Among the top names to perform are Nikolai Putilin (baritone), Dan Ettinger (conductor), Paul Armin Edelmann (baritone), and Giancarlo del Monaco (director).
