Next month audiences in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa will be able to catch a unique retro music show courtesy of Max Raabe and his Palast Orchester ensemble.The Germany-based act will perform the Heute Nacht Oder Nie, or Tonight or Never, show which has been doing the rounds across the world for nigh on 20 years.Heute Nacht Oder Nie showcases songs that were written and performed in Germany in the 1920s and up to 1933, when Hitler came to power. Most of the numbers in the show were composed by Jewish songwriters, most of whom managed to escape to America where the likes of Kurt Weil found success.Fashioned in the style of the era, with singer and front man Raabe donning tails and his 12-piece orchestra looking and sounding the part. Besides the faithful musical renditions Raabe and the ensemble spice up the act with a generous dosage of lampooning which, judging by the audience in Bonn last month, has across the board appeal.Many of the numbers were first performed by the Comedian Harmonists, an internationally acclaimed allmale German close harmony ensemble which worked between 1928 and 1934, before Nazi harassment took its toll. It was one of the most successful pre-World War Two musical acts in Europe and performed a wide-ranging repertoire of folk and classical songs arranged by Jewish tenor singer Harry Frommermann, as well as popular songs of the day by writers such as Peter Igelhoff, Werner Richard Heymann and Paul Abraham.Heute Nacht Oder Nie will play at the Opera House in Tel Aviv on October 18 and 19, Jerusalem Theater on October 20 and at the Krieger Hall in Haifa on October 21.
