A June 8th concert at the Jerusalem YMCA will bring together classical Arabic and Western music and musicians for an evening of improvisation. The free concert - and all concerts in the Sounding Jerusalem Festival are free to the public - amply illustrates the aims of the fourth festival, which runs from June 7 to 28. The interfaith, intercultural event aims not only to develop dialogue, but also (and especially) to bring classical chamber music to those Palestinians who have never heard it.
Joining the Casals (Spain), Modigliani (France) and Artis (Austria) quartets and the Argent Flute Trio (France) are musicians like cellist Erich Oskar Huetter (Austria), trumpeter Rainer Auerbach (Germany) pianist Arnon Erez (Israel), oud virtuoso Tayseer Elias (Israel) and the Watar Oud Ensemble (PA).
Concert venues in and around Jerusalem include a mountain-top near Jericho at sunrise, the Crusader chapel at Abu Ghosh, the Targ Music Center, the Church of the Ascension Augusta Victoria and not least, the rooftops of the Old City that will host the closing concert with Auerbach, the Sounding Jerusalem Brass Ensemble and some 40 young woodwind players.
The visiting artists also give classes and workshops to local institutions promoting dialogue. The NIS 200,000 budget comes from Germany, Denmark, Austria, France, Spain and Italy.
