The Israeli Opera is hosting the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theater, which presents – in its Israeli debut – Betrothal in a Monastery, by Sergei Prokofiev, a four-act comic opera.The current production was created at Moscow’s second largest opera theater in 2000 and was highly praised by both critics and audiences for its music quality and visual vividness, but above all, for the spirit of gaiety hovering over the stage. The show was restored especially for the Israeli tour.“Emphasizing the theatrical aspect of the opera is probably whatdistinguishes our theater from other opera companies,” says conductorWolf Gorelik, the artistic director of the production. “That said, thetheatricality of our productions never comes at the expense of theirmusic quality.Speaking about Betrothal, Gorelik explains that “onewill not find sweeping melodies or gorgeous arias in Prokofiev’s opera;its beauty lies in the very fabric of the music, which is woven fromthe subtlest details, nuances, humor.
