The 2009 Red Sea Classical Festival will be held this year from February 26-28 at Eilat's Hangar, despite the difficult financial situation in the country and the world. Eilat's mayor, Meir Yitzhak Halevi, approved the transfer of about NIS 1 million to the festival, hoping that it would bring tourists to the southern city. The internationally renowned Valery Gergiev will direct the festival, bringing with him 270 musicians, soloists and choir members from the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. The program includes works by Mussorgsky, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Mahler.
