150 haredim protest archaelogical digs in Jaffa

Over 150 haredim were protesting the ongoing archeological excavations near the Andromeda Hill area in Jaffa on Sunday, where ancient human bones have been found. Such demonstrations have been taking place on a nearly daily basis. Sunday's event was marked by the presence of two prominent rabbis from the Lithuanian stream of haredi Judaism, Shmariahu Yosef Chaim Kanievsky and Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz, as well as MK Moshe Gafni (UTJ).
The Eda Haredit recently decided to refrain from demonstrations in Jerusalem against the dig, after two motorcyclists were seriously injured when their bike collided with a trash bin that was placed in the middle of a road, but declared they will continue the protests in Jaffa. Religious Services Minister Yaacov Mergi is currently looking into the religious and legal aspects of the excavation works at the site following a recent request of the United Torah Judaism faction.
