18th century mosque on fire in Acre, circumstances under investigation

A fire has broken out on Sunday night in a mosque located in the old city of Acre.

Fire and rescue forces are currently working to extinguish the blaze, and have reportedly managed to control the situation. Additional forces on their way to the scene and the circumstances surrounding the case are under review, however from initial reports it appears as if the fire was not intentional.

Police have stated that it appears that there has been no damage caused to the actual mosque itself, rather only to an external structure.

The city's mayor, Shimon Lankri, stated that the cause is possibly electrical, but that the fire was indeed inside the mosque itself. He clarified that the prayer hall was not affected.

The al-Jazzar mosque was built in the 18th century and overlooks the Mediterranean Sea in the port city, which has a mixed population of Jewish and Arab citizens.
