2-hour work halt held to discuss attack on Nahariya nurse

Medical staffers at the Nahariya’s Western Galilee Medical Center held assemblies on Sunday in which they discussed harm done in the emergency room to a male registered nurse by a patient and his family on Friday. The relative broke into the treatment room and attacked the nurse, who needed urgent medical care.

The patient, in his 30s, was wounded in the lower part of his body. When he arrived at the emergency room, he was immediately checked and sent to angiography to determine if there was internal bleeding. He was then sent for treatment. Andrei Susland, the registered nurse, was asked to explain to the patient that the doctor would arrive immediately. When the nurse turned around, the injured man kicked him back forcefully and pushed him to the floor. When the nurse’s shouts reverberated in the emergency room, his relatives came and began to attack and kick him and his colleagues, curse them and call them names.

Susland was hurt on his back and also suffered harm to his face and teeth. "I am still trying to recover, but I can’t understand how I turned into a victim of violence. All I wanted to tell the patient was that the doctor was going to come immediately."

Hospital director Dr. Masad Barhoum said he and all the staff viewed the incident as very serious. "The phenomenon must be rooted out. I call on the police to set up a station at the hospital and prevent the staffers from being attacked" A two-hour work break was called to discuss the problem in the morning."
