27 arrested in soccer violence

On Sunday police arrested 27 soccer fans outside the Turner Stadium in Beersheba after a brawl broke out between fans of Hapoel Beersheba and Maccabi Tel Aviv. All of the suspects were transferred to the Beersheba police station for questioning. Those arrested were suspected of drug possession, possession of a stun grenade, involvement with the brawl, and attempting to enter the stadium without a ticket.
In July police arrested 47 members of the Beitar Jerusalem fan club La Familia on suspicion of illegal weapons trafficking and intention to bring pyrotechnics to matches. That same month Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan and Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev agreed to fund a new police unit that will combat crime at sporting events, beginning with the 2016/17 soccer season.
