4 killed in avalanche in French Alps

PARIS  — French authorities said an avalanche has killed four off-piste skiers in the French Alps.
A fifth person was also caught by the avalanche, but pulled from the snow alive.
Xavier Idier, an Interior Ministry official in the Alpine Savoie region, said the victims — two French citizens, a Briton and a Swede — were equipped with avalanche transceivers and airbag vests.
Rescue officials sent two helicopters and four doctors to the scene Tuesday.
Idier said the group's guide survived and was being interviewed by police. He was not the person buried in the avalanche, he said.
Tuesday's avalanche risk level was three on a scale of five.
