A year later, Nepal prime minister pays tribute to quake victims

A year after the worst earthquake in Nepal's history struck at four minutes to midday on April 25 last year, the Himalayan nation is remembering the 9,000 victims of the 7.8 magnitude quake and a second tremor 17 days later.

On Sunday (April 24), the eve of the disaster, the country's Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli led tributes to the dead in a ceremony at the ruins of the historic Dharahara tower in Kathmandu.

A minute's silence was held for the victims before floral tributes were laid at the foot of the tower, built in 1832 for the queen of Nepal, which was among the monuments destroyed when the quakes hit.

The event is part of national commemorations which also include a candle-lit vigil and three days of national mourning.
