The Supreme Court, on Wednesday, overturned an appeal issued by the lawyers of Asi Abutbul
and four others who were convicted of membership in an organized crime gang, money laundering and extortion and sentenced Abutbul
to 18 years in prison instead of 13 years as sentenced by the lower court.
Supreme Court Judges Edmond Levi, Edna Arbel and Neal Hendel overturned the appeal submitted by Abutbul
and his gang and accepted the state’s appeal against the lenient sentence. The judges determined that Abutbul
and his men practiced crime as a way of life and decided to lengthen Abutbul
’s sentence from 13 to 18 years in prison and that of his partners from 10 to 16 years.Abutbul
was first sentenced by the Tel Aviv District Court in July 2009.
