Accused Mexican drug trafficker says was US informant

MEXICO CITY - An accused Mexican drug trafficker awaiting trial in the United States says he was a confidential informant for US agents and is entitled to immunity from prosecution.

Jesus Vicente Zambada-Niebla, the son of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, the right-hand man of Sinaloa drug cartel chief Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, was arrested two years ago in Mexico and extradited to the United States last year.

US government officials in Mexico declined to comment on Zambada's allegations.

US prosecutors have denied he had "public authority" giving him immunity. They have until Sept. 9 to file a response with a federal court in Chicago, where Zambada is expected to go on trial in February on charges of trafficking cocaine and heroin and running cash profits back to the Sinaloa cartel.
