After arrests, Dutch mayor urges action on returning jihadis

AMSTERDAM - Dutch cities need more powers to tackle battle-hardened jihadis returning home from the Middle East, a mayor said on Thursday, a day after authorities announced the arrest of 12 people with suspected links to militant Islamists.
Thousands of Western volunteers have traveled to Syria and Iraq to join militant groups such as Islamic State, triggering fears among European governments and security forces that returning fighters may carry out attacks on their home turf. The mayor of the Hague, seat of the Dutch government and home to a host of international organizations, said Dutch municipalities lacked the administrative capacity and the legal resources to deal with the threat of returning militants.
