There would be a strict prohibition against drinking or carrying open bottles of alcohol in public places during nighttime hours, from 11 p.m. until 7 a.m., according to a plan unveiled Tuesday by Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovich. According to the initiative, proposed as part of the battle against the growing violence in Israel, the sale of alcohol in kiosks would be stopped and warning stickers would be placed on alcoholic drinks. In addition, police would be given more freedom to act against shopkeepers selling alcohol to minors, and they would be treated in the same way as drug dealers. "An innocent drink can fuel violence and can even lead to murder," said Aharonovich. "Just like it's forbidden for children to play with guns and knives, we won't let them fool around with the weapon of alcohol." The initiative does not include the arrest or imposing fines against youngsters caught drunk in public parks, and police and the Public Security Ministry stressed that despite the aggressive approach toward drinkers, they did not currently intend to totally outlaw drinking by minors.
