Aharonovitch nixes deploying IDF troops to patrol east Jerusalem

It would be a mistake to use IDF troops in east Jerusalem to support police patrols and help improve the security situation, Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch said Tuesday.

Aharonovitch said on a tour of the city that the security situation in Jerusalem is improving and there is an ongoing decrease in violent incidents in the capital. Nevertheless, extra police units that have been deployed in the city in recent months must stay on patrol for the time being.

He also said that he has approved a wide-ranging new plan to beef up security in the city, and hopes to bring it to the cabinet for approval soon.
