AJC says the fire at Notre Dame is 'a tragedy,' 'we are heartbroken'

The American Jewish Committee released a statement on Monday saying it is "heartbroken following the fire at the Notre Dame," the ancient French landmark is currently burning as French authorities fight to contain the flames.

"This is a tragedy for Catholics, the people of France, and all who revere that majestic edifice," the press release said. The AJC expressed hope the cathedral will "be swiftly restored to its prior splendor."
