Al-Qaida attacks strategic border town in Syria, killing 18

Al-Qaida militants attacked a mainly Kurdish-populated town in northeastern Syria, killing 18 people, AFP reported on Saturday.
The attack, which took place in the strategic border town of Ras al-Ain, reportedly killed five Kurdish militiamen and 11 jihadists. Also among causalities were two ambulance crew members, according to AFP.
This was part of a wider operation by Al-Qaeda against several Kurdish majority areas of northern and northeastern Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told AFP.
