American Jewish Committee 'deeply disappointed' with nation-state bill

The American Jewish Committee announced that it is "deeply disappointed" with the Knesset's passage of the controversial nation-state bill Wednesday, the organization said in a press statement Thursday.
The law's downgrading of Arabic from its status as an official language and the clause calling Jewish settlement a national value "put at risk the commitment of Israel’s founders to build a country that is both Jewish and democratic," the statement said.
"We respectfully ask the Government of Israel to clarify these and other questionable elements of the bill, and to reaffirm the core principles and values that make up the very foundation of Israel’s vibrant and admired democracy," the organization's statement continued.
