Amnesty: Palestinian activist is 'prisoner of conscience'

Amnesty International on Sunday dubbed Palestinian activists a "prisoner of conscience" and called for his immediate release after he was arrested by the IDF last week.

"Once again, Bassem Tamimi is being held solely for peacefully exercising his rights to freedom of expression and assembly," said Ann Harrison, the NGO's deputy Middle East and North Africa program director. "We believe he is a prisoner of conscience and should be released immediately and unconditionally."

According to Amnesty, Tamimi was arrested on charges of participation in an unauthorized demonstration, activity against public order and assault on a police officer.

Tamimi was first arrested in March 2011 and held in prison until April, when he was released for humanitarian reasons – to care for his mother who had had a stroke and was partially paralyzed. But he was confined to Ramallah and placed under partial house arrest there.
