Annan urges UN council to push for Syria truce by April 12

UNITED NATIONS - Every effort must be made to ensure Syria's government and opposition comply with a Thursday deadline to end a conflict that has killed thousands in the past year, UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan said on Tuesday.
"I am gravely concerned at the course of events," Annan said in a letter to the 15-nation UN Security Council obtained by Reuters.
"The days before 10 April should have been an opportunity for the Government of Syria to send a powerful political signal of peace, with action on all aspects of the six-point (peace) plan," he said.
