Apathy to AIDS out of place, says Sourasky expert

Apathy to AIDS out of pl

There is no room for apathy about HIV and AIDS, said Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center's AIDS center Dr. Dan Turner on Monday, since one in five HIV carriers is resistant to one of the drugs in the "cocktail" that can turn the disease into a chronic rather than a quickly fatal one. Speaking a day before World AIDS Day, Turner said his lab now performs resistance tests to AIDS medications for every new carrier. Resistance to one drug in the cocktail has increased from 11.5 percent last year to 20% in 2009, according to the physician. Sourasky diagnosed 100 new cases this year compared to 83 in 2008. Two- thirds are homosexuals, and the average age of a new patient is 35.
