Archaeologists discover remains of building from Hasmonean period in Jerusalem

Israeli archaeologists announced on Tuesday that they had discovered the remains of an ancient structure from the Hasmonean period in Jerusalem’s City of David quarter not far from the Old City.

The Israel Antiquities Authority said the structure spreads across 60 square meters while rising to a height of five meters, according to Israel Radio.

Archaeologists studying the area say they found ancient coins dating back to the time of Antiochus III and IV. Scientists also said they discovered coinage with the name of Alexander Jannaeus written in ancient Greek, Israel Radio reported.

Experts say the discovery is significant since it is the first time ever that the remains of a building that are confirmed to date back to the Hasmonean period were found in Jerusalem.

The IAA is continuing with more excavations in hopes of making more discoveries, Israel Radio reported.
