Ron Prosor, former ambassador to the United Nations and the United Kingdom, will be Israel’s next ambassador to Germany, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid announced on Tuesday.
“Prosor’s appointment symbolizes the importance of Israel-Germany relations and the continued strengthening of cooperation with the new government in Berlin,” Lapid said.
Prosor’s vast experience in Israel’s foreign relations will be a great contribution as Israel faces challenges on the international stage, he added.
Prosor said he considered the appointment as a “closing of a circle,” as his father, Uri, was born in Germany.
“As someone who represented Israel in Great Britain and the UN, I am approaching my third mission as an ambassador with a feeling of responsibility, understanding, and recognizing the importance and centrality [of Germany] in Europe,” Prosor stated.
Prosor was ambassador to the UN from 2011-2015, and was ambassador to the UK before that. He also served as director-general of the Foreign Ministry and diplomatic adviser in the Israel Embassy in Washington.
He was the spokesman of the Israel Embassy in Bonn, the capital of West Germany, when the Berlin Wall fell, and was instrumental in building Israel’s relations with the states that had been part of East Germany.
The Foreign Ministry also announced the appointment of Idit Rosenzweig as ambassador to Belgium; Liron Zesselensky as consul-general in Dubai; Tamar Ziv as ambassador to Kosovo, based in Jerusalem; Avi Nir as ambassador to Norway; Gali Dagan as ambassador to Colombia and Yaron Meir as ambassador to Vietnam.

Reuven Azar, former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s foreign policy adviser and deputy head of the National Security Council, was appointed ambassador to Romania.
All appointments must be approved by the cabinet.
