Ashkelon prison guard charged with smuggling phone to inmate

The Beersheba District Court on Sunday indicted a prison guard suspected of taking bribes to smuggle cellphones for security prisoners at an Ashkelon prison.

The guard, a 20-year-old Jewish man doing his national service with the Prisons Service, is being charged with taking money from Fatah prisoner Sharif Naji in exchange for helping smuggle cellphones into Shikma Prison.

Naji, who is serving four consecutive life sentences for security crimes, approached the guard and told him that he could give him large sums of money, as much as NIS 25,000 per phone. The guard was already given some of this money by Naji when he was arrested.

The guard faces charges of accepting bribes, conspiracy and allegations involved with aiding terrorism.

The prosecution wrote in the indictment that “in recent years we have seen repeated attempts [including successful ones] to smuggle cellphones to security prisoners in prisons in Israel... these phones were used for a number of purposes including helping them reach terrorist organizations in Gaza and the West Bank. The defendant’s actions are part of a chain of cellphone smuggling that presents a threat to the security of the State of Israel.”

They have requested that the guard be kept in custody until the end of his court case, partly to deter others.
