Ashton: Response to 'Naksa' protests should be 'measured'

European Union Foreign Police Chief Catherine Ashton addressed the Naksa Day demonstrations along the Israeli-Syrian border Sunday, calling on Israel to respond in a way that is "measured and proportionate," in a statement Monday.
The incident, in which some 20 people were reported to have been killed by IDF fire, "could undermine the long-held cease-fire on the Golan," Ashton said. "I call on all parties to exercise restraint."
The EU's top diplomat added, "Provocative actions like this should be avoided."
Combined with the deadly demonstrations that took place on May 15 for "Nakba Day," the "Naksa Day" events Sunday "emphasize the urgency to resume peace negotiations for a comprehensive and sustainable resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict," Ashton said.
"The EU stands ready to do everything possible to help all parties choose the path of peace and engage in successful negotiations," she added.
