'Assad ignored back-channel calming messages from Israel'

Israel had to send Syrian President Bashar Assad public threats after back-channel messages were ignored, Israel Radio quotes senior Israeli diplomatic sources as saying.
The sources say the decision to send Assad threats through the New York Times was made after he threatened retaliation following calming messages passed to him through third parties.
Last week, an Israeli official contacted the New York Times and said Assad risks the toppling of his regime if he reacts to alleged Israeli strikes on his country earlier this month, as Israel will retaliate.
