Austrian ambassador apologizes to fencers

Michael Rendi, Austria's ambassador to Israel, visited the ORT school in Ma'alot Thursday to apologize for not having “HaTikvah” played in an international fencing competition in Austria.
Last November, two fencers from the Macabbi Ma'alot team, Dana Satar Lanikov (14) and Alona Komorov (13), won first and third place in the international competition. When the band playing at the event did not find the Israeli anthem, the team's coach, Yaakov Fridman, led the team in singing “HaTikvah.”
“I emphasize that this was undoubtedly a technical mistake,” Rendi said, and adding “I understand what the anthem means to the Jewish State. Austria has a great appreciation for Israel and its accomplishments in international fencing.”
