Automatic health basket rise rejected

The Knesset plenum rejected in a preliminary reading a private members’ bill that would increase by 2 percent a year the size of the national health services basket of drugs and other medical technologies supplied by the health funds. The bill was presented on Wednesday by Meretz MK Ilan Gilon and a group of others lawmakers.
An automatic increase has long been opposed, however, by the Finance Ministry, which prefers to decide by how much the basket will be expanded and which for the last five years have given NIS 300 million each year, a figure whose real value has shrunk due to inflation and rising costs of medical technologies. Thirty-eight MKs voted in favor and 43 against.
