Ahituv joined the Shin Bet in 1949 and held several key positions in the agency. In 1961, Ahituv served as head of a branch of the Mossad - Israel's foreign intelligence service - outside the country. In 1974, he was appointed head of the Shin Bet, a position he held until his retirement in 1980 after 31 years of service.
