Bahrain court cuts sentence for activist over protests

DUBAI - The prison sentence of a prominent Bahraini rights activist jailed for taking part in unlicensed protests was cut by a year by an appeals court on Tuesday, his lawyer said.

In a case criticized by rights groups, Nabeel Rajab, founder of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, had been serving three years for leading protests against the wide powers of the Sunni Muslim al-Khalifa dynasty which rules the island kingdom.

Bahrain, the base of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, has been in turmoil since the pro-democracy protests led by its Shi'ite Muslim majority erupted last year. Washington has called on its ally to talk to the opposition.
