Beersheba says existent minor-drinking laws too lax

Beersheba Mayor Rubik Danilovich said that the issue of minors consuming alcohol must be addressed, as the law prohibits them from buying but not from drinking, Israel Radio reported Sunday.
The mayor said that for years he has been pushing for legislation banning minors from drinking liquor and that every weekend he hears another report of a stabbing or violent act influenced by alcohol consumption.
Over the weekend, Philip Gelar, 16, was stabbed to death in a brawl after having an argument with another friend of the same age at a house party in the upscale Ramot neighborhood of Beersheba.
On Sunday, the Beersheba District Court extended the remand of the suspect in the stabbing six days.
Five other teenagers who were in attendence at the party were arrested for being bystanders to the crime and not contacting the police. The five youths were questioned and then sent home on house-arrest.
