Beilin: Katsav should be pardoned, if he expresses regret

Former Justice Minister Yossi Beilin called for the state to grant former president Moshe Katsav a pardon should he request it, and should he express regret for his crime, in an interview with Israel Radio Thursday. Katsav's conviction for rape and his seven-year prison sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court Thursday, leading the way for the former president to begin serving his term in prison.
Beilin said that he wouldn't want to see a man who was a symbol of the state sitting in prison, as long as he is not a danger to the public. The courts, he added, did extraordinary work and that the punishment meted out was appropriate.
