Ben-Eliezer asks Arab leaders for direct talks in newspaper

Industry, Trade and Labor Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer wrote an announcement published in Thursday's edition of the London-based Arabic language newspaper Al-Shark Al-Awsat, calling on Arab leaders to support the move from proximty talks to direct talks in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas flew to Cairo Thursday to discuss the progress of the proximity talks with various Arab foreign ministers who are part of the Arab League's peace process committee.
In the announcement Ben-Eliezer stated that based on his close relationship with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu he has "come to the conclusion that the Palestinians, Arabs and Israelis have a genuine opportunity to complete a peace agreement based on the Arab Peace Initiative that should not be squandered."
He added that most Palestinians believe that former PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat erred by not agreeing to peace during the Camp David Accords in 2000 and called on Abbas not to make the same mistake.
