Ben-Eliezer grilled by cops, fraud squad

Labor Party MK and former defense minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer was questioned for hours on Wednesday as part of the ongoing investigation into allegations that he took funds illegally from a number of different people.
Police confirmed in the afternoon that Ben-Eliezer was again being questioned under caution by investigators with the National Fraud Squad of the Israel Police.
In July it was reported that police expect to finish the investigation into Ben-Eliezer with in the coming month. In July they secured a lean on his multi-million shekel house in Jaffa, believed to have been bought largely with illicit funds.
In June it emerged that among other allegations, Ben-Eliezer is suspected of accepting hundreds of thousands of shekels from a real estate developer in exchange for using his connections with the Egyptian government to lobby on his behalf in business dealings he pursued in the country. Ben-Eliezer was known for having close relations with the regime of former president Hosni Mubarak.
Ben-Eliezer is suspected of receiving $400,000 from oil magnate Avraham Nanikashvili in exchange for helping him during a tax probe, part of the millions of shekels he is suspected of receiving in recent years.
His son Ofir has been questioned by law enforcement authorities in the United States for his suspected knowledge of the alleged payments to his father.
