Bill limiting NGO ability to petition High Court rejected

The Ministerial Committee on Legislation rejected a bill limiting nongovernmental organizations’ ability to petition the High Court, after Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke out in defense of the judicial system in a Sunday cabinet meeting.
The initiative, by Likud MKs Danny Danon and Yariv Levine, seeks to limit High Court petitions by people who were not directly harmed by the subject of the lawsuit. Some of the parameters for such “public petitions” would include that no individual was directly harmed, that the case be significant for Israeli society, and that the NGO or group petitioning disclose all of its foreign funding sources to the court.
