Bill that could save PM from charges, passes first legislative hurdle

The Knesset's plenum voted on Wednesday in favor of a bill that could impact the outcome of investigations of possible corruption by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The bill, which would prevent the police from summarizing their findings in a criminal investigation, passed in a preliminary vote following an extensive debate in the legislature.

Critics of the bill claim it is a law tailored to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently under investigation in two corruption probes.

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, chairwoman of the ministerial legislative committee which approved the bill on Sunday, said it will undergo significant changes with her and Erdan’s approval between the preliminary reading on Wednesday and its first reading in the Knesset.
