Bill to unify emergency phone numbers passes first hurdle

A bill planning to consolidate emergency telephone lines to one, three-digit phone number passed unopposed in its preliminary reading in the Knesset Wednesday.
The bill, co-written by United Torah Judaism MKs Moshe Gafni and Uri Maklev, would unify the emergency lines of the police, Magen David Adom, the fire department, and any other body determined by the communications minister into one telephone number, which can be called, free of charge, during an emergency.
An administrative center will then direct the emergency phone call to the appropriate authorities.
