Bomb kills three in northeastern Nigeria

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria - Suspected members of a radical Islamist sect killed three street vendors in a bomb attack in northeast Nigeria on Monday, the military said, a day after 25 people were killed in a similar attack.

"Three people have been killed while two others have sustained injuries in an attack carried out by Boko Haram members on Monday," a military official told Reuters. He said the attack took place in central Maiduguri.

Boko Haram, which says it wants a wider application of strict Shari'a Islamic law in Africa's most populous nation, claimed responsibility for a bomb blast 11 days ago outside the national police headquarters in the capital Abuja.

The sect has been responsible for almost daily killings and attacks on police and government buildings in recent months in and around Maiduguri, which lies near Nigeria's remote northeastern borders with Chad, Cameroon and Niger.
