Brazil seeks Obama backing for UN Security Council

BRASILIA - Washington should back Brazil's bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council in recognition of its growing international clout, Brazil's foreign minister said ahead of a visit by US President Barack Obama.

Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota also raised the issue of US tariff barriers on farm products and said Brazil wanted to discuss its deteriorating trade balance with the United States.

"We want a relationship among equals," Patriota told reporters on Thursday.

His comments ahead of Obama's two-day visit to Brazil from Saturday reflect how new President Dilma Rousseff is aiming for closer ties with Washington but also wants concrete progress on issues such as trade and economic cooperation.
