Cabinet approves establishment of environmental ministerial committee

The cabinet approved the creation of a ministerial committee to protect the environment and deal with climate change on Sunday. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu (Likud) said at the meeting, "I asked Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) to head the committee. The committee must put together at the first opportunity the plans necessary to prepare the state of Israel for climate change, to prepare a national plan for reducing greenhouse gases and to oversee its implementation." To which Erdan responded, "My intention is to quickly push forward the plan to reduce greenhouse gases; my goal is to present in Copenhagen in December, the Israeli government's commitment to significantly reduce emissions in Israel by 2025." Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Ministry announced that Dorit Zeiss would head their northern division. Zeiss has been working in the northern division for the past ten years.
