Cabinet takes step towards joining UN WOMEN exec. board

The cabinet took another step to promote Israel's membership on the Executive Board of UN WOMEN, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women organization, on Sunday.
The cabinet allocated NIS 3 million to cover the country's membership dues in the UN body.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu emphasized the importance he places on Israel's involvement. "Since its establishment, the State of Israel has been known as a pioneer in the field of advancing women's status and has a proven record in the area of gender equality," he said.
He added that "the issue of women's status is a main policy issue for us," saying that "Israel's contribution to such a body from its inception could be considerable for the countries of the world."
