Companies fined NIS 20m. for not collecting bottles

The Environmental Protection Ministry is fining beverage manufacturers and importers NIS 20,466,120 for failing to adhere to bottle and can collection rules, the office announced on Wednesday.
Although the Deposit Law requires these firms to collect approximately 70 percent of containers sold, 175 companies failed to collect 34 million bottles and cans for the years 2010 and 2011, the ministry said.
According to the law, a manufacturer or importer who fails to reach the annual collection target must pay twice the amount of the deposit fee for each bottle or can not collected to the Fund for Maintaining Cleanliness, the ministry explained. If the companies fail to pay the required sums, the Environment Ministry can impose financial sanctions worth six times the amount requested, the office added.
