Copyright law may be revised to adapt books for disabled

A draft law proposed by the Ministry of Justice this week aims at allowing a breach in copyright law which would enable the adaptation of textual works to people with disabilities.
The bill, which had been initiated by Meretz MK Ilan Gilon, is intended to allow specialized organizations to modify and distribute books and other copyrighted documents in a way that would make them accessible for the disabled without risking a lawsuit.
This include translating books into braille for Israel’s 223,500 blind and visually impaired.
The ministry noted that if the bill is passed, Israel will join countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, which have already enacted similar laws to allow the integration of people with disabilities in cultural life.
