Court overrules government policy, gives state 90 days to free detained migrants

The High Court has given the Stateof Israel 90 days to free the thousands of migrants held in the Saharonimdetention center in the Negev, and decide whether their status is that ofasylum seekers or illegal immigrants to be deported.

With a unanimous ruling Monday, the courtstruck down by 9 votes to zero the state's entire new policy regarding themigrants, which allows the country to hold the migrants without trial for up tothree years.

The ruling leavessignificant uncertainty as to how the state will comply both with the court'sorder and its stated objectives to use all legal means to minimize and"voluntarily" deport the thousands of migrants.
