The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court on Saturday night released 27 left-wing activists who were arrested during a protest in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah on Friday afternoon, after 100 protesters gathered outside the city's district courthouse on Saturday night to protest the continued detention of the activists.
A number of the protesters played drums and other musical instruments. At press time the demonstration was ongoing and peaceful.
Left-wing activists and Arab residents of east Jerusalem frequently demonstrate against the eviction of three Arab families from homes in Sheikh Jarrah. The evictions are part of a decades-old dispute over 28 properties in the neighborhood that were seized from Jewish owners by the Jordanian government after the War of Independence 60 years ago.
